Opening up Flight School

The Stetson Flight School is seeking to broaden its reach to serve the whole club, not just the traditional clientele of R/C beginners and former flyers. Our instructional team includes people with a wide range of skills and expertise, from basic flying skills, to aerobatics, to tuning IC engines, to building and repairing models, to programming various radio systems, etc. We want to share this resource with club members who are looking for help.

Flight School is open for business every Tuesday (when weather permits) from 16:30 to well into the evening. So feel free to just drop in to look for advice and assistance or just chat. Bring your plane and gear, as appropriate. Don’t forget to check the club website on Tuesday morning to make sure Flight School is on that day (www.stetsonflyers.com).

Or get in touch with me in advance to discuss your issue and arrange for help. Call, text or email.

That’s the make-it-up as-we-go-along approach. In addition we intend to hold scheduled sessions on specific topics. One of these will demonstrate Forward Programming of a Spektrum Smart receiver. If you’re interested, please let me know. I’m thinking of doing it at the field, under the shelter, on a Tuesday evening in late July. More to come.

Flight School Getting Started

If you are considering taking up our hobby (or coming back to it after a time away), the Stetson Flyers Flight School can enable you to earn your Stetson Wings, allowing you to fly independently at our field. We have experienced instructors who can help you acquire the skills and knowledge needed to fly radio-controlled model aircraft safely and enjoyably.

2022 Last Night of Flight School Event Report

Event Date

The final session of Flight School for this year enjoyed favorable weather, despite a fairly gloomy forecast. It was attended by five students flying a mix of Apprentice, Mini Apprentice and AeroScout trainers. No models were hurt during this event!

In the accompanying pictures you can see the instructors hard at work scrutinizing models before flight, showing a student which switch not to press, demonstrating how to make a turn, and just standing around after a successful flight. Len is guarding the Flight School’s collection of equipment. One picture shows 12-year-old Kailen, a very promising pilot.

Flight School will return in 2023 with ground school sessions followed by a resumption of flight training as soon as the field dries out after the spring runoff.

Thanks to all who contributed to making Flight School 2022 a success.

President Daniel Marcotte
